Preserving the Brooklyn Bridge—Below the Surface

At Emily Warren Roebling Plaza (Pier 1), critical restoration work is underway beneath one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks—the Brooklyn Bridge.

Following damage from a recent boat strike, efforts are focused on restoring essential timber waler and fender systems that protect and support the waterfront infrastructure. This work plays a key role in maintaining the long-term structural integrity of the bridge and surrounding shoreline.

Project scope includes:

  • Replacement of the first row of timber walers and fender systems
  • Reconstruction of missing horizontal and vertical timber walers across multiple rows

With the first three rows successfully completed, crews are now making steady progress on the fourth—marking a significant milestone in the restoration process.

On site, Lys Deslouches, Construction Inspector on the Gedeon GRC Consulting team, is helping ensure the work is executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. Their oversight is critical as teams navigate the complexities of marine construction in a highly visible and historically significant location.

This project reflects the importance of proactive infrastructure maintenance—and the role our team plays in preserving the structures that keep New York City moving.
