With 13 years of experience in the engineering industry, Berioska brings both technical expertise and a powerful sense of purpose to her work—grounded in the belief that engineering can change lives in meaningful ways.

In this feature, Berioska shares the experiences that shaped her career, the people who supported her early on, and her perspective on progress and opportunity within the engineering profession.

How many years have you been working in the engineering industry?

"I have 13 years of experience in the engineering industry. Throughout these years, I have worked in different roles that have allowed me to grow both technically and professionally, gaining a well-rounded understanding of engineering work and its impact on society."

Berioska’s career journey reflects continuous growth and adaptability, shaped by hands-on experience and a broader view of how engineering serves communities.

What is the proudest project you have ever worked on?

"One of the projects I am most proud of was serving as a Regional Coordinator at the National Housing Institute in my country of origin, the Dominican Republic. In this role, I had the opportunity to help vulnerable, low-income families repair and/or rebuild their homes after losing them due to climatic conditions, fires, or other unforeseen circumstances. Knowing that my work had a direct and positive impact on people’s lives was deeply rewarding."

This experience underscores Berioska’s people-first approach and her belief that engineering extends far beyond infrastructure—it’s about restoring dignity, safety, and hope.

Who helped open a door for you early on — and how do you try to pay that forward now?

"Thanks to God, at the beginning of my career I had people around me who believed in me despite my lack of experience. I had the opportunity to work with professionals who, rather than judging me for being new to the field, were willing to support me throughout my learning process and skills development. Today, I try to pay that forward by supporting younger engineers, sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to grow."

Mentorship and collaboration continue to play a central role in how Berioska approaches her work and her relationships within the profession.

What’s a piece of career advice you wish more women heard sooner?

"Every woman in a leadership position should always give her best, work with dedication and commitment, and push herself even harder when necessary. Each job done well—or poorly—can either open or close doors for other women who follow."

What’s a barrier you’ve seen in engineering that’s getting better — and what’s still a work in progress?

"The representation of women in engineering has improved significantly in recent years, particularly in terms of visibility and opportunities. However, there is still work to be done when it comes to equity in leadership positions and recognition, and continuing to drive progress in these areas remains essential."
